New Election Laws and Voting Procedures

Election Day
You must be registered to vote in your precinct at least 10 days before the elections.

You must provide a federal or state issued identification card with your photo such as a driver's license, photo identification card, U.S. passport, or a military ID. Your identification card must be valid within the past two years.

Name on the identification card must match the individual's voter registration record.

You can get an Indiana photo ID card free of charge from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles license branch.

Register to Vote
You must be a U.S. Citizen and a resident of Indiana.

You must be 18 at the next general or municipal election.

You must live in the precinct 30 days before the election.

Go to your county voter registration office, circuit court clerk office, or any license branch or public assistance office to register.

Register by mail on a pre-addressed card available at public libraries, license branches, local school corporations with public secondary schools, local government offices, or on line at: www.in.gov/sos/elections.

Vote Absentee Ballot

Go to or contact your county clerk's office to request the Application for Absentee Ballot or Application for Absentee Ballot by Mail Only. You can go to www.in.gov/sos/elections  and get the ballots as well. To vote by mail, complete the Application for Absentee Ballot By Mail Only. It is so easy. Mail to the County Circuit Court Clerk.

You will receive a ballot in the mail.

Complete the ballot and return in the envelope provided and mail immediately. Follow all the instructions on the ballot.

Important dates to remember

April 7, 2008: First day a voter may vote an absentee-in-person at the county clerks office for the 2008 Primary Election.
April 28, 2008: Deadline for absentee-by-mail applications to be received for the 2008 Primary Election.
May 6, 2008: Primary Election.
October 6, 2008: First day a voter may vote an absentee-in-person at the county clerks office for the 2008 General Election.
October 27, 2008: Deadline for absentee-by-mail applications to be received for the General Election.
November 4, 2008: General Election Day.
